I have a 1988 70 horse johnson. Im having a problem with trim sending unit. I took it off to test it, but is a closed unit.??? my gauge is reading all the way down,, but when I turn the key to on position, it moves alittle down more. I move the sending unit back and forth but nothing????

Check all the wiring and be sure all connections are clean and tight.

The sending unit is just a varible resistor so you can connect your ohm meter across the two leads and see if the resistance changes as you move the lever. If it does, the problem may be in the gauge which is nothing more then a volt meter so you can test it with your vom.

c/6

Hooty

I did hook a voltage tester up to it, there on the back of the gauge, there is a spiral fusewire thing( I know what it does but not the name). I ran one end of the volt meter along this thing and the voltage did change accordingly. could gauge sti be bad??
