How to use Flush Muffs?

I used the search function, but I think my question is too much of a newbie question.
My first (new to me) boat - Glastron G175 with a Mercruiser 3.0 (not sure is the term is stern drive or I/O). My question is where do I put the flush muffs? I see these little 'gill-looking' fins just above the prop and I think they might go there.
(Great forum, btw, I searched the web quite a bit to find a good one).
--Mods: I apologise if I posted to the wrong forum - wasn't sure where to put it.

Bonus question: I live in San Diego and plan on running it in Salt and Fresh water - any advice on protecting from salt damage would be appreciated.

Re: How to use Flush Muffs?

The muffs cup over what looks like vents in the side of the outdrive.there is a "vent" on each side that the muffs go over.Turn the water on slowly until at least half way to full.then start it up.Always make sure the water is turned on first and then start.Turn off motor first and then the water.Never rev the motor when running on muffs and keep an eye on the temperature. If the motor is raw water cooled it should run at 140-160 at idle.Good luck!!!! Thanks for the info crazy charlie. I just did it. Ran it for about 15 minutes, temp hovered around 145. Time to put it into the bay!!

If you can, find somebody experienced to go out with you the fist time.

Don't forget the plug.

I/O - Inboard/outboard and is synonomous with stern drive
