i have a 2002 mercury 15hp. model 15m. i am just wondering how after i've raised the tilt mechanism and it locks in? how in the heck am i supposed to lower it back in the water without reaching in towards the mechanism and puttin my fingers in a bad area? there must be a procedure to lower the motor back down more safely. the only way i can figure to do it comes close to chopping fingers let alone reaching all the way over the transom to do it.

please help

I think in the owners manual it says that to lower the motor down, you have to rachet it up all the way and then it will lower down.

On my 15hp and a friends after much aggravation, we removed the rachet mechanism, drilled holes all the way through at the rachet stops, and used a tilt pin like the old style motor brackets. Other than this annoying feature, these are super little motors !

Re: how to use tilt for 15hp

while painting the bottom of my jon boat i finally figured out why my tilt mechanism would not work right. the horizontal bar that holds the motor up has a spring and the spring has tension from an e-clip on the rod. the eclip was missing.... modified an eclip from ace (was too wide O.D. but right on the I.D.) . when you pull the motor all the way up the spring kicks the rod out and allows it to go down. very simple fix but it was tough to see the spot where the e clip went. anyways works good now.
