How underpowered am I with a 40?

I need to put another motor on my boat and am trying to find the right balance between buying something new enough and something not too expensive. I have a little 16 foot double eagle for use in the inside passage of Vancouver Island. I just want to fish and do day trips...not interested in pulling skiiers or tubers. I saw a 40 hp 4 stroke honda at (what I think) a resonable price. I know this is a small motor, but is it way too small for what I want to do? Here is the link to the motor. Any advice would be appreciated. http://www.bchondapowerhousedealer.com/inv/off-road/122-bf40a2lrtc.html

I'd think you should be looking at a 70hp engine. A 40 would be underpowerd and a 4 stroke is less powerful than a 2 stroke in general.

The other 'reasonable' option I have seen is a 1994 90 hp Evnirude VRO for $2900...had heard that they are a little hard on gas which is why I am trying to find a way to buy a 4 stroke on a limited budget.

Begin to check what's max engine rated for that boat to see how much underpowered you will be. If it's not that heavy, will not pull skiers nor tubers, used with few mates, that engine will have plenty of power to plane and consume much less gas that bigger models. I use a 14" rib rated for a 40 HP engine with a 18 horse, planes well with 2 adults, gear and a box of beers.

Bob, thanks but by the time I paid for shipping and import duties (I am in Canada), it would probably be more worth my while to look at something like http://www.bchondapowerhousedealer.com/inv/marine/132-75a6lrtc-long-shaft.html . I only paid 3k for the boat and am not sure quite how much I am willing to throw in to it.

Sea Rider, unfortunately the plate with all that information is long gone but I would expect this is rated for at least a 90. It has a fairly deep vee which I imagine will require a little more power. There is an 80 on it right now with some problems that I seem to be unable to repair (structural), which is why I am replacing it.

Anything like that, with 115 max hp?
I see theres a few out your way, maybe someone has a 40hp on it and you could talk to them.
I'd be looking for a bigger motor, have you tried kijiji or some local classifieds?

See it from a different scenario, that boat could be rated for a 90 HP engine to carry x number of passengers and x number of weight to move at x speed, but if you will not carry max passengers and weight at all times, why need a 90 HP engine, nobody runs full wot all day, maybe to plane faster and then back-off to 50/75% throttle. Probably a 40/50 HP engine is all you'll need. As an example, my 14" rib is rated for a 40 HP engine to carry 6-7 passengers and x number of weight, as do not pretend to give a free ride at my expense to more passengers, the rib is mostly used with just 2 passengers and gear and perfect for a 18 HP horse producing 40 KM/hour. My rib alone is just 110 kilos and 150 with 18 horse. Better check smaller engines if fuel is a budget issue, larger are guzzler and with cracy prices now a days...

Point taken re: the bigger motor. I have been scouring the classifieds. I have found a few things but am at the point where I have to decide how much I am willing to spend. Thanks for the advice/help.
