Think this might be causing a small leak I have in the boat. How would you go about fixing it. I was thinking about filling in that small hole under the rub rail with that 3m silicone and then going over it with marine tex. What do you guys think? What the best way I heard that marine tex works awesome from a couple people but dont know the pros and cons. Im also going to post a thread about marine tex. Thanks

The rub rail needs to come completely off and the area has to be sanded and re glassed completely.

That's severe damage and needs to be fixed correctly due to the location.

Agreed. Depending on the extent of the damage I'd think 2 or 3 layers of 1708 biax on the inside (after sanding and cleaning), then do cosmetic repairs on the outside.

Triple agreed, attempting to cosmetically fix that will do nothing. The crack will re-appear the first time you hit a wave or small wake...or possibly just on the trip to the water. It'll need proper repair. If you don't care about appearance you could try some silicone (GE 4200 or 5200) it'll flex a bit and seal it up to prevent water comming in, but I don't recommend it.

Where exactly is this on the boat? Picture is too close to figure out what we're looking at.

Just for fun I would guess port side viewed from astern with a boarding ladder mounted just to the right in the photo. But it sure isn't a little love tap as noted in previous posts, needs attention.

Good luck in project

That sure looks like a lot more than just in the gel coat. Take a look at the underside of if with some good light.

yeah that def not just the gel coat. Its a crack in the fiber glass but doesnt go through the boat. The gel coat is what cracked or craking... spider web effect not sure if its been there or getting worse pretty sure it was there in the gel coat above the crack
