How would you handle this problem?

Anybody out there had this problem? We were using our jon boat with a 1984 Mercury 25XD recently when all of a sudden it sounded like it was running out of gas and then it died and we could not restart it. We had gas, and it had been running fine, but it wouldn't start. My husband usually does all the work on our car and boat engines (so he knows about engines but this one has him stumped). I contacted this forum last week when he was working on it and got some good suggestions, but there is no spark, and the stator, and coils appear nonfunctional (according to the manual). We're looking for suggestions. What would you do if you had <br />this situation? Thanks.

Howdy WildBill.<br /><br />You have two coils and one stator. The likelihood that both coils would fail at the same time is about zero.<br /><br />I would replace the stator and check the coils after that.<br /><br />Good luck.
