How's it going to run?

I have a 1982 Evinrude 50hp on a 1985 16' Starcraft FM160 aluminum. When i bought the boat and took it out the motor started and ran fine, but I could not even get it to plane. Well minutes later the lower unit went out. (I had replaced the oil prior to this).

My question is now that I have a new LU how well do you think the motor will perform on such a boat? It is rated for a 90hp max. Also the motor does not have power T/T.

I just don't know if I really need to think about finding a little stronger motor with power T/T or not?

Thanks Guys!

Re: How's it going to run?

I have a 16' Sea-Nymph that is a little heavy, lots of stuff and all the decks are 3/4 marine wood with an '81 50 Evinrude and it runs 27-28gps consistenly and the fastest I have ever seen is 32 gps.

I have a CMC tilt trim though which may get me a bit more speed.

To compare I read a test on 16' aluminum fishing boats and even 2008-2009 boats with 50s are all in the 26-30 mph range so that is probably all you will see unless your boat is really light.

My general rule is that a boat needs 70% of rated power to perform satisfactorily. On your boat that would be 63HP, making a good 50 at the bottom of the range. Without the ability to trim it out on plane it would be further handicapped.

I would go to a nice JohnnyRude 70 with PT&T on that boat.

I agree somewhat under powered but unless your hauling 4 guys and gear it should be adaquate.Carefully setup and propped it should plane easily and make 25 to 30 mph. certainly capable of planing with a reasonable load.

Well 2 people and equipment will be standard but their will be times with 4 people as well. I am going to try and trade one of my other outboards for maybe a 70 to 90 horse with T/T

I have a:
1974 Johnson 40hp with controls and steering
1985 Evinrude 50hp with new Lower unit.
1974 Evinrude 150 with controls and Power T/T
1979 Johnson Sea Horse 6hp.

All these motors but none I need.

Oh I guess I also have a 1989 Force 85 with T/T on. Hmmm? Heavy?
