I have just returned from our local Bass pro store where I priced out a 14-48 welded aluminum boat with a 25 merc 4 stroke tiller control which was the max hp for the boat. after looking at the boat on the showroom I inquired about a 16-48 for more room. The 16' boat weighs 60lb more , the sales man said that I needed a 40hp for that boat . Now 60lb in my mind is like adding the same weight as a large battery or a extra 9 gal fuel tank. I was wanting to know if sticking with the 25 would be a mistake . I feel like I would only loose a few mph but have a boat that would float higher with the same load.I am on a buget and am not racing . your thoughts please.

Re: HP for 14'&16'

Welcome aboard.

With the 16-48 there is more surface contact....... yes a 25 hp will work. You might be frustrated quickly with the lack of power but it will work. The true rule of thumb is to mount 75% of the rated capacity on the stern (Minimum) for proper planing performance.

As a fishing cruising rig ....you should be fine.

Well I pulled the trigger on a new Xpress 16-52 ss with a 25 e-tec this boat is 130 lbs lighter than the 1648 tracker , the dealer told me to expect 25mph with a passenger and fishing gear and that will be just fine with a crusing speed around 20mph. I appreciate the input Bob

I like the xpress boats. Keep an eye on the welds ;) They had a few minor issues but, very nice hulls!

Re: HP for 14'&16'

Well folks things are never what they seem!! , I turned the deal over to my credit union to handle the paper work, the bank called me and told me that they were having trouble getting the necessary paper work from the dealer , the dealer was swearing that they were taking care of it . My credit union finances several hundred boats a year so this is nothing new, after haggleing with the dealer (Real Deal Marine, Alexandria,LA) for 3 days the bank suggested I see if I could find another boat that suited me at another dealer so I asked for my $500 deposit back they informed me that that was not necessary they had me financed with thier lender I declined and I have yet to get my money . I went ahead and in 3Hrs I was the proud owner of a 16/48 and a 25 yamaha 4str on a trailer .which is treating me well. Now I need to try and get my money back!! I am also conserned about whether my credit has been ran and if so was my name forged , what a mess. Any of you folks have any suggestions ?

Just stop in and ask them to forward a copy of all of your correspondences to your lawyer. (If you don't have a lawyer make one up.) This will probably be enough to get them to write a check on the spot. Of course you will have to have some acting skills. And it wouldn't hurt to do it in front of a showroom full of customers.

I hate to do somthing like this but I am afraid it will take some thing like this . I paid them with a credit card and they actually charged me $520 ( not sure what the $20 is about) (over the phone) I have filed a dispute but I am not optimistic.

reverse the payment on the credit card.

I've been involved with a number of crooked used car dealers and various title and payment scams through the years (for work, not me personally). If they are bad guys you won't see your $500 again. If they are just broke, you probably won't. If they don't give it back to you on your next visit, you probably won't. So reverse the charge and let them scream. Tell them to go look up "failure of consideration" if they have a problem with that.

Well folks it has been a bit of a journey , the credit card co reversed the payment after 30days and a stack of paperwork,my $520 was credited back. While sitting at the house the phone rings one night, it is my credit card co telling me that I have been recharged buy the boat dealer and I am instructed to rewrite my statement and fill out the paper work. In the end I was recredited my $520. at least for now.

That stinks porkchop. Sorry to hear you've been the victim of either an unscupulous or moronic dealer (or possibly both since the two aren't mutually exclusive:rolleyes:). How 'bout the Xpress though? She still treating you right? I love that rig. Yammy and Xpress. Do it get any gooder?
