I purchased a 1980 17' sportcraft center console boat yesterday, it has a 60hp evinrude on it and will be looking to upgrade motor eventually. It does not have the sticker for the max hp ratings. Anyone know what size motor would be best, and what the max hp would be. Thanks for any help.

Re: hp for 17' boat

Tough to guess as all boats are rated differently. I'd think a 90-115 would be nice.

Re: hp for 17' boat

I have a 17' alum BB and it is BIA rated for 130 hp; says so right on the yellow and black
BIA certification plate......that is not a misprint. I run a 90 on it and prior to ethanol I could nudge it just over 50 on a cold day. Now it just nudges over 48 GPS. I really don't know what I'd do with a 130. The 90 is fast enough.
