Hey, This is my first time here, and am wondering what would be a good engine size to power an inflatable boat? I would like to possible pull someone behind it. I am probably going to have mabye 3 friends(1 on tub, and 2 in boat). I am also on a budget, between $5-$2000, because I am only 15. If you have any suggestions on what kind/brand of boat i should get that would be great, and if you have any ideas on another boat that would work for me, that would be great. Thank you in advance!

welcome aboard,
need more info to answer questions like size of
boat... all boats will come with a plaque from
the coast guard with max hp rating. tiller is
always rated lower than remote steering models.
good luck,
M.Y.

Re: HP needed

Does your inflatable have a transom? Is so just get as much engine as you can afford without going over the hp limit for that boat. If you have an inflatable where the pontoon goes all the way around like a Sevylor or Sea Eagle, they also have a capacity plate and are generally limited to about 3.5 hp. These boats will not plane, the boat starts to bend if you apply too much power. 6-8 mph max. In fact, they do just as well with a trolling motor as with a gas motor.

Welcome, Dill Pickle…

If your inflatable is not a RIB, Rigid Hull Inflatable, it is not likely you will be able to water-ski or wakeboard behind the boat, regardless of it’s size. You can certainly drag someone behind it, but it’s not going to be pretty. :)
