Is it XP? If so, when starting the computer, before windows starts, press the F8 key. Then choose Last Known good configuration.

Changing things in the BIOS won't help I'm afraid. Do you have the 2000 CD? If so you can boot to it, go through it like your going to reinstall windows.

You'll come to a screen that asks you if you want to repair or do a install. Choose repair and a dos screen should come up. It asks which install you want to repair, type the #1. It will ask for a password, type it in.
Then type chkdsk /? this will give you a list of switches to use. I think it's chkdsk /F

Go to Ebay, bite the bullet and get an XP upgrade. 2000 sucks and will probably become unsupported when Vista gets vetted. While you're at it, get Norton AntiVirus and keep it current. Do it now or do it later, your choice...

Better yet, go to ebay and buy an Intel MacBook
Run OS X most of the time, and switch to XP only when needed for "special" software.

I have to take issue with this statement. Before I retired, we had 33 large MS Exchange servers, 43 Domain Controllers running Active Directory, and an untold number of file and print servers, all running Windows 2000 and servicing 13,000 employees over 7 states and DC. 2000 only sucks if you don't know anything about it.

BTW, roscoe, try doing all that with OSX. It's not a panacea.

Ditto.....and Win2K will be viable until January 2010. As for Norton Antivirus...have a look around. Symantec is having a really bad time with NAV. There are much better options.

Re: HUGE trouble with Laptop

dolluper, just went thru the same thing with my back up desktop.
It would boot up to my desk top and then kick off and do it all over again, even in safe mode.
Mine turned out to be a bad processor.

Don't know about your's, but sure sounds like the same thing mine ws doing.

Congratulations on your retirement. Exchange was written by the devil himself.

I'd really like to see the innards of an AD structure on a domain that size. My fave customer has about 50 computers and 9 servers. One of which is the DC. I've implemented group policy for them ( <3 gpmc ) throughout all their departments. We can now just about plug anything in anywhere, drag it into the appropriate OU, gpupdate, reboot and let it go.

It would be interesting to see how it all scales up across multiple sites and all the other neat stuff that comes with it.

For as much as I like Linux and hate Microsoft sometimes, I don't know of any solution that touches AD. (Novell might, but it's mostly alien technology to me.)

Will installing XP over the older OS get rid of the virus?
I have tried that and had no luck.
I ended up re-format then fresh install..
I have a XP corporate edition that i could make you a copy of but i won't be home for 2 weeks to do it..

I never said OS X was.
Expecting OS X to run a 2000 system would be like trying to run a Merc I6 with an ECM from a n Evinrude V4. Two different animals.

What I said was with the right laptop (Intel MacBook) you can run OS X AND Windows XP when needed, on the same computer, without even rebooting. Switching between the two as needed.
Why not have the best of both worlds.

If he is to even consider a new laptop, there is no logical reason to not consider a MacBook.

Re: HUGE trouble with Laptop

On June 30, 2005, the Windows 2000 product family enters the Extended Support phase, which continues for at least 5 years through June 2010.

• Microsoft offers a minimum of 10 years' support (5 years Mainstream plus 5 years Extended) for business and developer products. The Microsoft support life-cycle policy provides predictable coverage of Microsoft products and continues to set the standard for product support policies industry-wide.

• Microsoft is not ending support for Windows 2000. During the Extended Support phase, Microsoft continues to provide security hot fixes and paid support but no longer provides complimentary support options, design change requests, and non-security hotfixes.*

Note: The Update Rollup for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4) is the final release of Windows 2000.
