i run a 1985 Wellcraft 248 Sportsman. We run the boat in fresh water that is 'stained' by the source, a huge swamp.
part 1] we are having problems removing the brown stain left at the water line. it appears this stain is the combination of the natural color of the water, and the oil film created by the oil burners @ 2 cycle boats.
This past season was so bad, that Ive tried , hull cleaners, degreaser, a mild scrubbing pad, mineral spirits, and bleach, which has removed the majority of the stain from the waterline. so far, its been washed three times.
A concern in using stronger products is that the 'stick on water line tape' is right where the stained hull is.
I really do not want to end up restripeing the boat, as this issue has been a yearly issue. Every year, I fight with these stains,
and usually end up at some point just living with the stuff that wont scrub off. It sucks waxing over what appears to be dirt.
part 2] Assuming i can get this hull to a satisfactory level of clean, it would be nice to keep it that way. I am not happy with the variety of both marine and auto waxes that I have used over the past years. It seems that they offer no protection from the oil scum that clings to the hull. most seem to fail within the first weekend that we are in the water. considering it take a good afternoon to wax this hull, its almost self defeating. We trailer the boat, so wash downs are frequent, but by seasons end, the scum line has darkened to a point that it looks like we are boating in a mud puddle. Is there a wax product that will repel this oil scum and keep the stain line from penatrating the glass hull?
This weekend I will be doing a final wash, top to bottom on the boat with a scrubbing pad. This is to be absolutly sure there is no surface oxidation or old wax resadue remaining on the hull or top side glass. any suggestions will be appriciated....
