hull damage problem

hey guys,

been shopping for another boat and saw rather interesting hull damage that im curious to the cause. So i was looking at a 1986 mastercraft tournament ski boat and found 2 1/4 inch deep 1 inch long nicks in the hull about midship below the waterline. next to these nicks were 3 to 4 hair line cracks that ran from midship to the rear of the boat and they were 2 feet long. i looked at the bottom of the boat and found similiar cracks but they were "stepped" at differnt heights like ripples. on the other side of the boat i found similar cracks and no hull nicks. so what cause this cracking?

Re: hull damage problem

Another possibility is the stringers having 'hard points' up against the hull.

Its an inboard correct ?

In any case those are some well built boats IMHO ..

YD.

yes its in inboard and from what i can see its nicely made but the cracks are 2 feet long both side and bottom on the impact side and seems that they are getting water behind them. the weird thing is similar cracks are appearing on the otherside but not as bad. i was thinking the wakeboard tower might be causing it. its 2 feet higher than a normal one and they used it alot

Re: hull damage problem

we would need pics. but it is unlikely that the tower would cause these.

if it was the tower,,,,the cracks would appear at the deck line.

i dont really know if its a hard joint in the stringer, as i think in 86 the master crafts were an all glass over foam stringer. but i could be mistaken

Re: hull damage problem

thanks for the feedback so far guys, i drove 3 hours to see this "perfect" boat and when i go there he all of the sudden couldnt find the title he "had in hand". good old craigslist, i was so mad at that point i saw the damage and left without taking pics. from what i was able to describe it doesnt sound like its really as bad as it looked at first. if i do go up there or get this guy to send me pics i will post.
