Hi all...

I was told by a friend that my drain hole is supposed to have a metal sleeve. It may have had one before I got it, but it sure doesn't now. The wood in the hole in the transom seems to be coated in fiberglass resin therefore it has stayed dry and intact. No softness or rot at all. What should I do? Should I leave it as-is or sleeve it? If I sleeve it, where do I get the proper materials?

Any advice? Thanks!

you can buy the sleeve in any marine center,it sometimes comes as a kit with the plug.Use 3m 5200 sealant to install the sleeve.Charlie

Before I added a brass sleeve, I'd be darn sure that the present hole is "too big". Many boats have glassed holes only. I sure wouldn't want to drill out a well-glassed, proper sized, manufacturer installed, hole to accomodate an add-on brass sleeve that wasn't necessary in the first place. RichG

Scupper or drain hole?

A scupper is a hole in the hull above the waterline and does not require a plug. They are usually not lined with brass tubing. The idea is that as water gets onto the boat’s deck it can drain out on it own.

A drain hole is below the waterline and if so will require a plug. The hole is often lined with a brass tube to facilitate a flip-lock or T-handle type compression plug.
