Hull integrity, ???

Hello. I just aquired a 1972 Silverline Comoro. 17' tri hull. It's a total rebuild project. I think this boat has potential but I'm really concerned about the lateral wood beams under the floor.

This poor boat was neglected and left in the open with no tarp for 6 years. It had 3" of mud and leaves in it. It took me two days to disasemble and clean it out.

The Lateral wood beams along the hull are badly deteriorated, so now my main concern is, are these beams only for floor support, or are they for structural integrity?

. Thanks for any info!

Re: Hull integrity, ???

Can you Tell I'm a total Rookie? The wife and I started talking about getting a boat about two years ago but my time and wallet have been tied up fixing the house.
I found this 72 comoro on Craig's List for $200 bucks. Hull, 140hp onboard Mercruiser, and trailer, so I jumped on it thinking all I would need to do is rebuild the engine. But after I cleaned and gutted it I started worring about the hull inegrity.

After reading more on this website I went and checked those stringers again. There is only one spot of rot, but the rest of it is just surface mildew. I taped around with a hammer and it sounds pretty solid.

I don't have the resources to totaly reconstructed the hull like the fellow did with his 70 comoro, But my hull isn't as nearly as bad as his was. So What If I cut out all the rot, grind down the bad foam, splice and reinforce the stringers, re-resighn and refoam the entire thing before I rebuild the floor. That might be cheap and sloppy, but the goal here is integrity. Photo link

I am in the same situation as you. I am currently replacing the stringers, deck and ribs in my 19ft silverline.. I think it is a 1972 but who really knows with a silverline. Search 19' Silverline  I have pics there. Currently figuring out how much fiber I need. I currently have the stringers in the boat and gonna use them as templates. well keep me posted and maybe we can help each other

I'm getting scared I'm way over my head here. I started cutting out rotten wood looking for good wood to splice into and I havn't found any yet. I'm pretty sure it's all dry rotted.
I'd haul this tub to the dump and buy a brand new boat, but I can't find anybody making tri hull bowriders anymore.
I just need some confidence. I need a coach. Some one who knows what to do and explain it to me.

No picks this week, just me scratching my head.

Welcome to iBoats!!!
First off. Most of the guys on here were first time rookies and they did Great work. You CAN do the work IF
  • You want it bad enough
  • You realize it WILL cost money
  • IT WILL take time
  • it WILL take effort
First thing you need to do is Read every thread on the forum on Stringer and Transom replacement. Do a search for it.
Next you will need to congregate the proper tools. You will need a Circular saw, a 4 1/2 inch Grinder, sanders, scrapers, pry bars a Good Respirator, Goggles, Gloves etc..

The link of the other guys restore show you what you will have to do. Basically Step one is to take the top half you your boat off. Step two is to cut and grind out all of the stringers/transom and old glass until you have nothing but the glass hull. Then reconstruct the wood stringers/transom and Glass them back in and cut out the new deck from new wood and glass it back in. Step three is put the top back on. Step four is finish the inside and get the motor running. Last but not least get her wet and have fun.

I WILL help you every step of the way. You can PM me anytime. I am always on here. There are LOTS of others that are always willing to lend a helping hand. YOU won't believe how much help you will get. By the time you are done YOU will be the expert!!!!

If you have the willingness, Time and money you can do it
Oh yeah Money. to do it right, I would estimate that you will spend around $1,500 - $2,500 before you are done. It all depends on how much interior work you have to have done. But that is cheap when you consider new boats are $20,000.00 now.

You can DO IT

I'm just sayin...:D

Hello DRoush...and welcome to Iboats..

Why do you want a TriHull ? .. I mean they were good for pulling Tubers and skiiers..but other than that ?

You can drive around in the backwoods and find trihulls for about 500-2500 ( depending on who, what, where and how ( some good ones out there ) . You dont even need to see a "Sale" tag on a boat for you to stop and ask if they want to get rid of it :) .

If you feel your "in over your head" .. then you might be right. Your the only one who would know for sure.

Yes..you can If guided do Anything you want ( build a Brick and Mortar Loo if you want ). However Not all have the .. brain for it..or the feel whatcallyou..

I have connection with many different "types" of people that could R&R HVAC systems that have no clue about glass repair. They would try it..but its not really in there blood. Others have masters in electronics.. Would I trust them ( even with step by step ) to do a Major repair.. LOL .. no.. they are .. um.. too "in there field" if you will..

Im not saying you can..or cant.. Im saying alot of the people that want to go home and start to something thats out of there box ..can/could be somewhat disaterous to there health/safty ( possibly rifts in personal relations ).

I/we would give you our All .. but sometimes its not good enough..and sometimes It may become dangerous if we dont recognize something ...

I hope Im making myself clear..

YD.

Re: Hull integrity, ???

Hello,

That is a nice looking boat there. Those older crafts have a certain style to them that appeals to a lot of people.

I am doing a complete inside and out rebuild of my Batboat. The structural overhaul was finished last year.

If interested here is my blog. http://batboat.blogspot.com/ Start at the oldest post and work your way up. It details what I did, step by step, provides a list of materials and tools needed and has tons of photos.

I wouldn't have gotten anywhere with this vessel had it not been for this forum. All of the information members gave me, research and other stuff is compiled into this blog.

Good luck and please keep us posted. :)

Re: Hull integrity, ???

Thankyou everybody.
Why do I want a tri-hull? I guess it reminds me of my grandfather's old Sears catalog "Sea King 55", I like all the wide open space. You can fish, ski, or just tour the waters. The closest thing I find 1990 or newer is the Glasstron GT-185, but it's built like a Porche, with tiny hip hugger seats,no room to move around, no room for a cooler, no room for fishing gear.

I've looked at a few Silverlines, and bayriders, everytime I see a boat I like it turns out to be a rotten P.O.S.. I am so used to hearing people tell me, "The hull is solid, just needs an engine!" Yeh right!
Well, I gambled $200.00 I could fix the rotten wreck I bought, but after 2 months of messing with it I can now proudly say I know how to avoid buying a rotten boat.
Oh well. I learned a whole lot getting my hands on a boat I could take apart without having to worry about making it worse. lol For money I gained allot of knowlage.
Truth is, I don't have a garage were I can take my time and do the proper work. I would love nothing more than to take my sweet time and rebuild this Silverline but thats just not going to happen in my HOA.

The wife and I talked it over and decided to get rid of this thing and spend our money on somthing 1990 or newer. I guess all that marine vinyl she bought to redue the intirior will make great seat covers for my truck:D
