Hull Repair Question

Hey Guys just bought my first boat 1992 Bayliner. I notice on the Hull there is a hole about the size of a quater in the fiberglass. Looks like the previous owner clipped a dock boat or something. I would like to fix it I have fixed Dings in surfboards before with fiberglass. Is this the same process? What do I do once I fill it in? Can people recommend products? I saw on here I need to repair the gell coat? Any advice is appreciated.

Re: Hull Repair Question

Pics always help us to help you. Where is the hole located? Above or below the water line? That helps to determine the extent and type of repair needed.

The best way to post pics to iBoats is via a Free Photobucket account. R U trying to upload from your Phone? This is a problem too!

Re: Hull Repair Question

Looks more like a bullet hole. lol

Close to or at the waterline. You'll need to do more than just "fill" it.

First, do you have access to the inside of the hole?

Re: Hull Repair Question

With photobucket, hover over the pic, and then use the last window, the IMG code to paste into your iBoats thread. The pic will show up directly in your post. What's the rest of the boat like? Any soft spots in the deck? Have you checked the transom? For that small of a hole and it's location, you could prolly get by with an Outside only repair, but if you're gunna have to replace the deck and thus have access to the inside then it won't be any problem at all.

The deck and transom seem solid. The hole isnt yellow inside so I am guessing it had happened recently. How would i go about an outside repair? I do not have access to the inside

Re: Hull Repair Question

Use a dremel tool or R/O sander with 60 grit paper and sand down to the glass and continue to sand until the hole is beveled out. Sanded are will be 6" in circumference. Mix up some thickened resin and apply a 1/8" layer over the hole and smooth it out. When its cured sand smooth. Apply 2-3 layers of 1.5 oz CSM. When cured sand and fair. Mix up some gelcoat paste and use apply. Sand, buff and polish. Are the stripes a decal or painted?

The CSM cures on its own or I am glassing over it? Any specific gelcoat I should be using? Brand? Any advice on buffing and polishing the gelcoat? How long would you estimate this job to take? I believe the stripes are decals I felt an edge on the blue stripe. I am thinking I will just razor blade the red stripe off?

Re: Hull Repair Question

The CSM is the fiberglass. You need to use resin with it. After the 1/8 inch layer just fills the hole, as WOG posted, the CSM/resin will create a strong bond, outside the hole, but bigger than the hole. That's why he said taper it down.

BTW, each layer should be slightly larger than the previous layer. Before gel coat, you will need to use a fairing compound (thickened resin) to smooth out the repair (with sanding, of course). Good luck.
