I was wondering if anyone could give me some idea of typical hull scantlings of a fibreglass hull in the 40 to 50 ft range. I'm about to go look at a one-off custom built 48 ft ketch. The owner says that at the sheer the hull is 3/8th inch solid glass. At the turn of the bilge it's 1.25". I'm used to steel hulls. So I'm not sure if the sizes he's telling me are good or not.

Any & all help would be greatly appreciated.

Mike

For that kind of boat & money, I'd pay a surveyer or naval architect to advise.

Good advise about a surveyor. You really need to know design and construction details before sizing glass thickness. Regardless, 3/8" at the sheer sounds light as a general rule. 32' stock production sailboat scantlings without coring are that thick and near 3/4"~ at the turn of the bilge.

Be aware that custom boats built by a professional yard are totally different in resale compared to home builts. Homebuilts, no matter how well they look, generally don't hold high resale value. If anyone who tells you different take it with a grain of salt.

Who designed and who built the boat?

Bill P.

Thanks. I was thinking it sounded a bit thin. I would most certainly have a surveyor go over it if I were to take it any further. I don't have my notes with me at the moment. He said that he had a NA design it & professionals build it in '86. But I don't remember their names. I'll have to dig some more into who designed & built it. I'll let you know. He owns the mold & had a second hull built but never fitted out. Which he is also selling. It's a nice looking boat. One of the things that got my attention was the head room. I'm 6'7", so the choices are few when it comes to plastic boats if I don't want to duck all the time while living aboard. I've also been looking at 1979 Endeavour 43's.

Mike
