Hey guys

A friend of mine is stuck a decision.

570DI
or
728

As you can tell by the "DI" the 570 is down imaging.

Quadra is on the 728.

DI will show bottom alot better from 2D sonar.

Quadra Beam will show me whats to either side (Kinda of like a poor man's SI, but smaller coverage)

Mabey people with either or both DI and/or Quadra Beam can chime in and tell me the pro's and con's of each unit, and their experiences with them.

Thanks,
DamianJP

I like that the DI will show bottom alot better from 2D sonar.
My 2D sonar will put all three of those units to shame when it comes to detail.

Problem is, most people don't have a clue how to read 2D sonar. I compare the two to taking a photo and taking an MRI of someone. To the untrained eye the photo looks very detailed. better than an MRI. To the trained eye, the photo falls far short of the detail the MRI provides.

If you want to look at photograph, go DI. If you want to know what is really going on down there, stick to 2D or a unit that offers both.

Hmm which 2D do you have??

I really am just comparing two units the 570DI and the 728 Quadra, sorry for posting wrong I edited it to clear it up.

Both of them have 2D plus DI for 570 / Quadra for 728. So when I do "Train" my eye I will have 2d plus either quadra for more coverage and telling whats on either side of the boat. Or the Down Imaging for better bottom clearity.

I'm running a Furuno 585 with an Airmar B160 transducer. A little more expensive than the ones you are looking at.

Something to think about if you boat in open water. Quite a few of the guys I fish with jumped on the DI / SS bandwagon when it first came out. There is no heave compensation on these units so they will not tolerate rough water conditions. The constant rocking of the boat smears the pictures into blur. They are having the same issues with side scan.

I'm not a real fan of HB becouse of their marketing BS, but in your situation, I'd go with the DI

Yeah, If I had the $$$ I would go Furuno for sonar and garmin for charts, but I dont have $1600 just to spend on a sonar alone, then the airmar is more $$$ too.

Thank you for your input.

What is up with HB's marketing?

The quadra beam is the same as the older 3 beam except the down element can do two frequencies. I have 3 beam on older 400TX and DI capabilty on my 798SI.

If you use a FF for finding suspended fish, the quadrabeam is better. The side beams can tell you which side of the boat they are on, and covers more area in one sweep.

If you fish relatively shallow water where structure identification and location are more important, the Di is the way to go.

They play games with their specifications. Most everyone rates cones angles using the industry standard -3db. Hummingbird and some others use -10db that effectively doubles the cone angle. Same cone angle, different rating system. Like saying car x is faster because car X goes 136 kilometers per hour and car Y only goes 85 miles per hour.
