I just bought a Helix 5 DI GPS. Concerning installation, is there any reason NOT to hook this into the 12V deep cycle battery? I have connected my current unit to the starter battery, but the other one would be more convenient for this installation. Opinions?

Hook it to a battery. If you have problems with noise, hook it to the other one. That's about all you can do for starters.

If you normally use the battery for a trolling motor, and deplete the battery too far, the Helix will power down, due to low voltage.

Only way to know for sure if this will effect you, is to try it, unless you already know how low the voltage drops in your battery.

Hooking up to the starting battery should not cause a issue. The unit will not draw enough power to affect engine starting.

My humminbird has an alarm setting to warn if the battery drops below a predetermined setting.
I used to use it when I only had a starting battery. (I did keep a jumper pack on board)

Connect it to the deep cycle. The worst that can happen is the units shuts down once you've consumed the batteries "usable" current. Running a battery below the threshold of the Helix is detrimental to the battery as a whole anyhow
