Humminbird Troubles

I just bought a 1989 bass fishing boat with a LCR 400 series fish finder that doesn't read depths properly. I've gotten the manual from Humminbird but I still can't get it to find the right depths in waters that I'm familiar with. Someone said it needs a new transducer which is the puck style. How can I check this out for sure. If it is something simpler I'll try it, otherwise I'll replace it.

Do yourself a favor and replace that ancient thing, chances are that either the xducer or the head unit or both aren't working properly.

what do you see on the screen - is it just showing the wrong depth, or is it acting up in other ways, too, like flashing the display, or showing a lot of "noise" on the screen?
