Please forgive me if this has already been addressed else where on the forum. I recently just purchased a 1999 hurricane 198 in which the fuel gauge pegs 'empty' when you turn the key on. My steps thus far:

Power is getting to gauge and sending unit

Using a test light, with the ground of the light attached to the battery ground and touching both the Red and Black wires, both show a completed circuit.

tested the resistance between the red wire and grounding (with the black wire detached) and got a reading of 45-50 (the tank is practically full)

With all wires connected, and using the test light. both connections have a completed circuit with the ground light attached to the batt negative.

If I ground the fuel sending unit directly to the battery, the gauge reads 'full'

what baffles me is with the green/black wire when disconnected and using a VM, is showing 12+ volts

Is this correct? I thought this was a ground/bonding wire that, when the VM is connected to the negative of the battery and connected to the green/black wire shouldn't show a reading.

How do I make sure the unit is wired correctly before I buy a new sending unit? thanks for any help!!Fuel Sending Unit.jpg

Re: Hurricane Fuel Sending Unit

I have hurricane 195, and the gauge has not read properly from day 1. If the bow is up it reads full, bow down it reads empty. I just keep track of how long its been since I gassed it up.

I know this doesn't really help :cold:

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,.... That's not right, green is bonding, 'n black is ground, they're both common with the battery Negative(-),...

'n That, I don't understand,... The red should show 12v, 'n the black should show Ground,...

A fast sending unit test is to jump the red at the sending unit to the black, dont connect it just bump it as a connection. the fuel gage should go to a full tank reading, the sending unit reads by resistance and by jumping it has none and it reads full.
