i believe 77 is straight mechanical shift, not hydro-mechanical.

I had to look it up myself. It is Hydro-Assisted ("Power Shift"). The hydro does help to a certain extent to hold it in gear.

Maybe, but that was not the primary function.

According to the factory manual, "The hydraulic pump mounted in the forward end of the gearcase and driven by the forward gear utilizes the gearcase lubricating oil to supply the force needed for shifting. The shift rod controls the assist cylinder valve which directs the hydraulic force to assist in placing the clutch dog in the selected positions....."
