My '03 Ranger Edge has responded to our little cool spell by not completely releasing the clutch when I first press the pedal in the morning. After a couple more presses it is fine.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the slave cylinder.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Have you checked the fluid? Looked for leaks? It might be time for a replacement OR you might have moisture in the fluid and it might be frosting/freezing.

Re: Hydraulic Clutch Question

It's either leaking and needs tightened and bled or the clutch cylinder is bad. If it shares the brake reservoir, and the level is good, the slave cylinder probably needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Never heard of moisture freezing in the lines, but I guess if you don't flush it every couple years it's possible for it to build up. When's the last time you flushed your hydraulics?

[colour=blue]It may not be the hydraulics causing the problem, the thrust bearing slides on the gearbox input shaft sleeve - it may be gummed up and not sliding easy.

Just a thought.

That's true Dunaruna. He never said whether the pedal felt normal or not...

You can see the slave cylinder on the transmission. It's easy enough to tell if it is retracting all the way.

If it is retracting, it's the clutch itself. As mentioned, most likely the release bearing or the trans. nose cone.

Re: Hydraulic Clutch Question

Well I dropped it off at the dealer today. They will look at it on Monday.
This morning there was free play in the pedal at the top end and took 8 pushes before getting good release.
It is under warranty so my cost is nothing.
Thanks for input.I like to know a bit beforehand to not look ignorant when talking to the techs.

Well I picked it up from the dealer today. The slave cylinder on the tranny was leaking so it was replaced.

I didn't know the tranny had to be pulled to replace it.That is not something I would want to tackle.
