I'm currently in the process of repairing my lower unit on my '76 Johnson 85hp. The source of the problem was a damaged front cover and screen on the hydraulic assist pump. The screen damage caused particles to enter the pump mechanism and caused the lower unit to bind. I have ordered a new pump cover and screen. I beleive this should fix the pump problem. However, there were a couple of damaged parts that were no longer available that I may possibly need. These parts are the seal and retainer that go over the screen area of the pump. My question is... are these parts absolutley necessary? I'm not exactly sure what this seal does. It seems it may provide a barrier from keeping larger particles from entering the pump intake. I'm hoping it may be possible to run without these parts. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Note to moderator: This thread is somewhat of an extention of an earlier thread of mine. My prior thread was getting little response. Therefore, I started this new more specific thread.

Mc....I'm not real sure either what the rubber seal is for. But looking at it, you could probably get away without it. If you want the part, Seaway Marine in Seattle might carry it. They carry a lot of N/A parts for OMC (800-332-0803). Joe Reeves might even have them in his left overs. Or....try the link below.

http://www.twincityoutboard.com/

Keep us posted.

The rubber compnent is part #315403 ($15.00). The metal band is part #315642 ($3.25), and according to my book, both items are still available. Prices are approximate.

I have the rubber component but not the metal band should you have a problem obtaining it.

To damage that screen etc, I assume you hit a unmovable object with the nose of the lower unit?

OBJ, Joe thanks for your responses. I brought my manual with p/n's to a local J/E dealer, he told me the two parts in question were not listed in his book. Is it possible he has a newer book, or did he just make a mistake refrencing these numbers? Nonetheless, how critical are these parts? Can I possibly run without them? Ideally I'd like to have the parts and install them on the pump. However, this will probably set me a week back, and I really wanted to get the boat out this weekend...

I was wondering how the heck the screen got damaged myself. I know this motor was out of commission for many years before I resurrected it this year. I theorized that maybe it had been moved around and possibly dropped on the prop. I did hit a few things lately. I was fishing a Wisconsin flowage (reservior) a few weeks back and did manage to clip a few stumps at low speed. I did not damage the skeg or prop, and really didn't think much of these collisions. Though perhaps that is what knocked the $%!# out of the front cover of the pump.

The latest book says the seal is no longer available but the band is.....go figure. The screen may have been damaged before you got it Mc. I don't thing a bump against a stump would hurt it.

Well, I guess I could buy the seal from Joe and the strap from J/E. I don't mind spending the money, I just hate to be without the boat for another week (the days are getting colder and shorter up here). Though, I certainly do want to see that I repair it correctly. Does anyone else know exactly what the function of this seal is and if it is OK to run without it.

I looked in the service manual and can't find an answer to your question Mc. The only couple things I can think of are possibly it keeps any type of material out so the screen won't plug or maybe to keep the churning action of the gear lube away from the pump intake. Best I can come up with. Maybe Joe Reeves can make us both smarter if he sees this..... :)

Not every hydro-electric unit used the rubber seal and metal band. You can leave it out and the unit will work fine.

Thanks Seahorse,

That's the answer I was hoping to hear. In fact, I noticed in my Seloc manual images of electric shift LUs that didn't have the seal. This corresponds with what you say. Nonetheless, does anyone know what it is for (just out of curiosity)?

Thanks everyone for your input. Looks like we'll be fishing this weekend!

Re: Hydraulic Shift Pump Seal '85hp

I got the parts to repair my pump last week and proceeded to put the L/U back together. Everything went smoothly. I took my boat yesterday for a test run and it ran perfectly (even without the seal). Thanks for everyone's help.
