i just bought a used boat with seastar hydraulic steering for the outboard. im having an issue, my steering wheel spins freely without turning the motor, once in a while after a few turns i get a slight grab but not enough to turn the motor, the helm has fluid in it all lines seem to be tight without cracks. the boat is a 98 so not too old.where to start?

99% you are low on fluid. needs to be refilled, bled, refilled, bled. repeat until now play in the wheel.

Shopping around for my new helm.the one that was on there is a 1.7... Whats the difference with the 1.7 vs. The 2.4... Can i replace with a 2.4.. Will it hurt anything.. Just asking because i found a 2.4 for cheaper than 1.7

Tried bleeding out lines and the helm does not pump fluid at all, even tried with both valves out.. Nothing still. Just buying a new one

The higher the helm capacity, the less turns lock to lock, the more steering effort. A 2.4 will have 4 1/4 turns lock to lock but the effort will be higher than a 1.7, which has 5 1/2 turns lock to lock.

put the new helm on and everything works great now... helm went bad from sitting and not being used for 5 years
