Hydraulic steering problems

I have a seastar system steering a 150 Evenrude. The seals at each end of the piston were leaking. Some times the fluid would run pretty low but after filling the helm it would work OK until the reservoir would run low again.

I finally bought a kit to change the seals on each end of the piston. I was not able to remove the piston from the starboard side. Taking the nut off the end didn't help. So my first problem was that I couldn't change the starboard seal. It wasn't leaking as bad as the port seal so I just put it back together and only changed the port seal. I'd like to know how to remove the piston so I can change that seal.

My next problem was that after puting the parts back together I filled and bled the system according to the instructions. The only part of the directions I ignored is using two people to bleed the lines. Now my problem is that I can't turn to starboard unless I spin the wheel quickly. THe helm will also not come to a stop turning clockwise no matter how much I turn the wheel. I can steer to port just fine. What has gone wrong?

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance. Mike

get someone to help you completely bleed the system...your system has air in it.

Unless you have a power purge, bleeding is a 2 man deal...

Re: Hydraulic steering problems

Thanks for responses. A guy at a repair shop said it sounds like the helm has gone bad. I hope you guys are right. I'll try to bleed it with two people.
