First off hello fellow boaters! I am new to the Merc/Mariner world as I bought a Sea Ray motor last night for my Manatee. It is a 100hp I believe an 88. It has hydraulic steering, but my boat already has cable steering installed. Now I am pretty sure the hyraulic lines are too short to run on my manatee unless I purchase new lines. Now back to why I am posting, Can I convert my motor to cable steer? And if so how do I do I go about doing it? I would like to go back to hydraulic steer later on so I will keep the steering set up untill I can purchse new lines and route them through the boat. Any and all feedback is appriciated IE: keep or not and or how to convert

Ayuh,... If ya want to go to cable steering, remove all the hyd. stuff, 'n install the cable system....

Or,....

Buy the right hyd. lines, 'n a hyd. helm to replace yer cable system....

Re: Hydraulic steering to cable

Thanks for the reply Bond-o,

Well I have the old helm and lines(2 feet short) from the boat I got the motor from. Now I could order the new 18' lines for around $100 and install the helm and lines on my boat, or just purchse the steering Link assembly for $40(but what else will i need).

I purchased this 1988 Sea Ray (Mercury) 100hp for my boat, my boat has teleflex cable steering installed and working properly, the boat I took the motor from had hydraulic steer so the motor has hydraulic installed right now.

After the hydraulic steering is removed form the motor, do I run the steering arm through the tilt tube, then attach the link assembly to the motor? From that I have seen online, there is a nut at either end of the tilt tube when the steering arm is installed. I have looked at boats-net, but cant figure out the part # for those nuts.

Pretty much I just want to know is it better to have hydraulic or the current teleflex cable style that is installed on my boat? And if I keep the mechanical steer what else will I need aside from the link arm?

I will take pictures after work.
