Someone refresh my memory. On a Chevy (3.0L), with hydro lifters, how far do you crank down after the chattering stops when doing a valve adjustment with the engine running? 1/4 turn? 1/2 turn?

I've got a very slight tap tap tap under my valve cover so I want to reset the rocker arms this weekend. You can barely hear it (friend does not hear it) but I do and I don't want to!

Thanks!

Re: Hydro Lifter Adjustment

If you remove the valve cover and get the piston to tdc with both valve's closed, you should not be able to move the push rod up and down, but should be able to rotate it, if you have play in the push rod, just make sure it is not bent,if strait, then tighten rocker down while moving pushrod up and down, until the push rod is snug between lifter and rocker, and then 1/2 turn down to load the lifter, you will always hear a slight tick when listening. Did you put all lifters and pushrods back in the way they came out?

Quickest way New lifters Put the nut flush with the stud and make 5 full turns down. If the are used lifters 4.5 full turns with the nut flush with the top of the stud. You dont need to do this running its a static adjustment.

Well after a few more hours of run time the tapping has quieted itself down, hopefully it was just a break in issue. Thanks again folks.

Engine is running like clockwork, smooth as silk.
