I just put a stringray hydrofoil on my 2011 90hp optimax and the tach in WOT went from 6000 to 6500 ... same top speed with a 19 prop. I don't want to run that high of rpm... should I change my prop ?

I would probably take it back off and see of the rpm's go back to pre-foil numbers. What condition are you trying to correct with the foil?

What Maclin Posted. Finplan2 our you multi posting on different posts here? In my opinion hydros are used for improper boat/ motor/trim setup. .02

Since your motor's max rated rpm is 5750, I'd say you needed a different prop even before you put the foil on.

Or your tachometer suddenly decided to go haywire, since I have not seen a Stingray foil increase rpm.

trying to trouble shoot 2 issues ... maybe tach setting is wrong... and maybe i should have had a different prop pitch in the first place. i had a 2006 115hp optimax with slightly larger boat and same pitch with no issues in tach or hydrofoil. it really seems odd right now.

Take the foil off.Do a lightly loaded test run.Get us the boat info, prop pitch, wot rpm and gps speed.
Wouldn't hurt to read the stickys at the top of the prop forum.
We're not trying to stall you; we need some base line numbers to tell if your setup is working.

had fun fixing this... took everything off, put new plugs in and air filter too. in idle, adjusted the tact setting under the dash. it now idles at able 750, then wot at 5900 to 6000. also switched prop to a turning point (hustler)... nice handling too

While it appears you have improved things. My info says 5500 is the max rpm.
Without the numbers we asked for we can't tell if your setup is right.
Without the numbers we still can't be sure about the tach.
If we had the prop size, gear ratio and gps speed we would have 3 out of 5 numbers we know are right.
would be much easier to tell if the tach is indeed accurate.
Your motors health depends on running within the correct rpm range.

I don't have data on the Optimax 90 engine you have. On my 2 stroke carbed 2002 90 the gearbox is 2.33:1. On 2 stroke 115s the gearbox is 2:1. If you are comparing the running of the 115 to the 90 your problem lies in keeping the same prop on the same boat. Keeping the same top speed with the rpms you posted says you need a new prop with a couple more inches of pitch which would load the engine more, reducing the rpms but mph should increase.....but that's debatable and only a test will tell.

I went to the BAM prop slip calculator and ran some numbers. These numbers are without consideration for slip; just max possible speed if you theoretically had your prop (screw) turning in a solid medium:

Current 19P 6500 rpm 50 mph
Current 19P 6000 rpm 46
New 21 5500 47 (if it loads your engine down that much)
or
New 21 6000 51

Prop slip varies from like 10% to as high as 30 or so. Light fast hulls with lots of power and a good gripping prop like mine can run around 10. Boats with more weight and wetted area, more of a standard designed prop, and otherwise adequately powered and all may run 15 to 20.

HTH,
Mark
