I have a 17.5" bass boat with a 115 hp merc on it, I'm having some trouble get it to top speed and it doesn't seem to want to plane out. I've noticed that the motor has a huge hydrofoil stabalizer on it, other similair rigs do not, could this be my problem, and would it be worth taking off and testing or am I just bobbing for apples at this point. any one have a Number or a formula to determine how low the motor should be on the transom?

thanks,
Thomas

Re: Hydrofoil question

Anti ventilation plate of lower unit should be roughly flush with bottom of boat.Actually it is best to have motor mounted as high as is possible without experiencing cavitation or prop slippage when exercising tight turns on plane at three quarter throttle. The hydro-foil ,while creating a bit of drag and possibbly robbing a couple of mph at WOT should otherwise allow your boat to plane easier. However , If motor is in fact mounted too low on transom,it could act to increase drag and make it more difficult to plane.
