I have a 2001 express 1756 duck boat and because of hp limits on the lake i use, i put a 25hp big foot merc on it. The problem is - when fully loaded the boat pushes like a barge will a hydro foil help this problem? also when triming motor up after trimming up just a bit boat starts to porpose will this help here also?

Re: hydrofoil

Hi, Dukster.

A hydrofoil will certainly help both problems, but I don't know if it will solve either.

I use a SE Sport 300 on my 17' boat and get on plane quicker and at lower speed. Top speed is unaffected.

If you are porpoising at a little trim your boat may be stern heavy. try relocating some weight forward.

Good luck. :)

Re: hydrofoil

dukster,What kind of full load are you talking about.A hydrofoil will help lift the stern but if youre pushing max. weight limits may not plane.
Weight distribution and motor trim are critical
to planing under load.
Foil probably would help porpoising some.If boat
porpoises when you trim out dont trim out so far or move some weight forward.
I think foils are great they did wonders with my mothers 15ft 50hp outboard and my sisters 120 hp 18ft Cobia bow rider.Just be aware it will lower empty speed some, though I dont think you can tell. They are also very helpful for keeping the boat on plane at lower rpm.
Your boat weighs 500lbs and if your pushing the max 1200lbs people motor and gear it sure will be tough for a 25 to plane. You could go down a couple of inches in pitch but be careful not to
over rev when lightly loaded.
Would be good to have a tach.Tinytach makes one
not too expensive and supposed to be easy to install. They have a web site.

Re: hydrofoil

Thanks guys! Steelespike looks like you did some homework. :D I've been thinking about adding a tach so i could try another prop. With a couple of guys and gear in this boat i'm probably at the max. I thought that the foil would help get it on plane on the days i'm pushing the limit. J.B. i'm not really worried about top end the boats rated for a 90 and it would fly with that but i run 26-28 by my gps. H.P. would solve my problem but i'm just trying to get the most of what i have. Thanks again

DUKSTER,I also own a 1756VJ Xpress running a 40 HP yamaha tiller control and CMC tilt&trim. My boat is a complete dog without the dolefin installed, extreme porpose and takes forever to get on plane. This boat also seems very picky about where you have the weight setting in it.With the fin in place I have planed at over 1900lbs (bad deal don't ask)and run 41mph empty with the fishing prop (17 double cup)installed.I love this boat!

Re: hydrofoil

DS-3, Thanks for the input! My 1756 has the side console and power trim. Gun box , live well etc. I dont really have the option of moving anything around the way its set up. I think i'll put a fin and a tach on it and maybe see about changing the prop. Main problem is i take everything but the kitchen sink. :D
