Hydrolock...the verdict

94 Volvo 302. I put the risers back on after making some temporary gaskets. Guess what, the flapper valves just aren't there!! All I see in the pipes is a steel rod. No valve anymore. Both sides. No wonder I ingested water.

Tried to start it, and the engine rotates about 300 degrees then it goes CLUNK. Put it in reverse, rotate the prop slightly...same thing. I think when the guy tried to start the motor those few times on the water it gnawed off a few flywheel teeth, because when it clunks the starter just engages and whirrs.

I was hoping to see if anything internally was bent, but with the flywheel messed up...crap. What kind of $$$ am I looking at here?

The flywheel shouldn't be too expensive. Don't know if they did it on the 302, but Ford made some with replacable teeth rings. Unfortunately, the motor will almost assuradely have to come out to fix it.

The shutters dont make it out the exhaust. pull the drive and look up the exhaust bellows, or in the exhaust port in the drive

You'll need to pull the engine to replace the Ring Gear on the flywheel...

That's what I figured. I wonder if it's cheaper to have an automotive shop pull the engine rather than the $120/hr the marine place wants.

$120.00 hr sounds kinda high, Im in TEXAS and were at $70.00 hr normal pull and replace is 4hr. but it really doesnt take that long, unless theres alot of interior to pull. Have you checked around other marine shops? Theres no tellin what a auto shop could screw up on your boat. May cost you in the long run.

I called all 5 Volvo shops in the area. The only one that could start working on it is about 40 miles south of me, so I dropped it off today. $90/hr. He doesn't think anything internally got bent, but we'll see.

Recently replaced the ringgear on a 302 vp (1982)
the gear was part of the flywheel and the whole job took approx. 6 hours.
