I just bought the boat and it has a hydraulic leak at the helm. It is a seaswirl striper 1996 with teleflex stering. I was wondering if any one has had this problem, and how to fix it? Any help would really be appreiciated.

Seaswirl,

I am having the same problem . Just found this company in Florida on line: They are sending me a seal kit for my unit.
rigginghydraulics.com. If you send Peter Linwick an email at sales@rigginghydrualic.com I am almost sure he can assist or better yet there is a toll free # 1-800-718-1649.He has been very helpful.

let me know how you make out.

hi, you can get a seal from just about any marine parts supplier for a buck fifty. it is called a helm seal. it is very easy to change. the hardest part is getting your steering wheel off. try this: back off the nut on the steering wheel shaft till it covers thread. have a friend grab the steering wheel and pull hard on each side of the steering wheel and then give the nut a whack with a ball peen hammer. should pop right off. remove the 3 screws of the cover plate. remove old seal and clean the area before putting on the new seal. make sure you get the right seal, there is a pre 93 one and a post 93 one. good luck

Just pull the wheel with a gear puller.

c/6
Hooty

Pity I did not know about a buck fifty deal. The seal kit is on its way at $ 37.53

Re: hydrulic leak in steering at the helm

I had to replace one in October. I just shot an E-Mail out to Teleflex and they sent me one ... free.

Pull the wheel, which usually isn't at all hard to do. Do not go banging on the nut or shaft with a hammer. Also, because there are rarely any threaded holes in the hub of a boat's steering wheel you won't be able to use a conventional steering wheel puller, but most gear pullers will work just fine. Actually you can usually just pull by hand while you rap the steering wheel's hub slightly from the side with a small hammer, but once again, don't bang on that nut or shaft in such a way as to direct the force into the helm unit. Once the wheel is off you will see a cap over the steering shaft that is held in place with 3 screws. Remove the screws and small plate and the seal will be under it. Take a pocket knife and pry it out. The seal has a 1" inside diameter and it is square, about 1/8". As a temporary fix you can sometimes just take it out, flip it over, and put it back in. It won't last but if can save a weekend sometimes.

Thom

Thanks guys I didn't check the posting in a while so today I pulled the wheel off took out the three screws and dids't really see a seal so I took off the two hoses from the back un did the four holding nuts and removed the whole thing. On the back of it there is hex nuts holding the back piece of the unit on I noticed that one of the hex nuts seem to be brokem off.Would that might be why it is leaking or do you think that it is just the shaft seal? I will se if I can find the seal it is a seastar 1.7 helm.
