Do Not use Auto fluid. outboard has additives for the outboard, auto can be used in an emergency only, and for a short time.

Re: Hypoid oil??

Oil posts are very inspirational. In 54 they (omc) speced 90w auto gear lube. It worked with great success and should be ok to use today in a 54 omc. Today's marine and auto gear lube have identical API specs so whatever is "better" with marine lube is most likely closer to advertising hype than reality. Read new motor manuals and they say use marine lube or an equivalent API type.

Is the oil doc around anymore...so he could explain reality from the front seat?

Re: Hypoid oil??

Hyppoid actually refers to the type gears that the oil was to be used on.

If you look closely at the rear end of a rear wheel drive vehicle, you will see that in order to maximise clearance and have the smallest drive shaft tunnel, the pinion enters the rear case well below the centerline. Since this causes it to intersect the ring gear at a skewed angle, The gears must be specially cut to a mathematical curve. These are called HYPOID gears. Thus the oil term.

Outboards do not have hypoid gears in the lower unit, however hypoid oil is a sulfur bearing extreme pressure oil--which is what lower unit gears need.

Been using 75-90 auto gear lube for years, whatever is cheapest. Never had a failure. I don't think my gears know any different. Of all the boards I've been on, oil threads seem to get the most passionate disscusions.

Re: Hypoid oil??

cc67, I completely agree with you but will detail a recent experience I had with my Merc 115efi.

Ever since the first lower unit oil change at 100hours in 2004, I switched to Penzoil 80W90 gear oil and ran that brand for over 300 hours and three changeouts. At about 400 hours, on a whim, a decided to switch back to the Mercury high performance plus gear oil (the blue stuff). Somewhere between the 400 and 500 hour mark, a bushing above the water pump failed and allowed some saltwater in. I noticed this during the 500-hour lube change so I had it fixed and all is well, total repair bill was around $350.00 parts and labor.

I often pose the following question to myself: If that bushing failure had happened while running the non-emulsifier Penzoil in the lower unit, would I have been facing a much higher repair bill? I think the answer is yes, so no more budget lower unit lube for me.

All my outboards are late 50s early 60s OMC beaters. I guess if I had $10,000 in an outboard I might be a little more anal about my oil. :D

Tashaspapa is right about anti moisture additives, and synthetic additives, at least that's what it says on my bottle of merc gear oil. Detroit Locker Hypoid gears rule.
Hey CC67, is that a model 1911? Nice!

You could if you wanted to dribble it in there a drop at a time. Otherwise the air in the case won't let it run in, and you always wonder whether it is full or not. Filling it from the bottom ensures that all the air is expelled out the top, and when oil reaches that level, you know it's full. In a word: Easier.
