This past week I finally got my family off of government programs! We have had the kids on WIC which in this state is a food program for children under 5. They give milk, cheese, peanut butter, formula, fruit juice, eggs, beans and cereal.
We also got the kids off of Medicaide for children in this state called Kids Connection.

It was great for us, but I hated every minute of accepting the bennefits.

We got onto the programs 5 years ago so my wife could afford to go back to school. It would have cost us $512 a month to add my children to my insurance at work and another chunk of money to add my wife. Over half my paycheck. Then with my sons food alergies when he was little his formula cost $46 a can. We went through a can every other day, they were smaller cans. Then my daughters asthma medication, hospital stays, and all of the normal kid problems.

My wife has of course graduated college a year ago december. This past January took a job full time. She is paid pretty low for teachers wages compared to the state average, but they provide health insurance and she is paid enough to break us even each month.

So I am proud to say we are off of the programs. They did what they are meant to do and gave us a chance at improving our lives. One advantage to being poor!

When I went to re-certify for the WIC food program I told them I wanted off that we were making enough money to survive now. They were so shocked and wouldn't let me. They had to run us through an application process anyway to verify we were over income. When I assured them that we were doing well enough to be off the program they went to get a supervisor. Then they discussed what to do from there. The supervisor agreed that they were not there to raise children, they were there to help people get ahead and if I could prove we had improved our lives they would just drop our case. I gave them a pay stub.
THEN they argued that I might need another month of bennefits to get by until paychecks were in. I told them that since I already had her pay stub that she was already getting paid and we were fine. I finally settled for 1 more month of bennefit coupons for food. These hit the trash as I walked out. They are in the form of IOU type vouchers, the stores are paid back at the end of each month. So my throwing them out does not deprive anyone else from collecting.

I was just amazed that they were so slow to close our case. They said nobody ever comes and tells them they want off. Everyone waits until they are kicked off for making too much money. That would take over 3 months for us.

We would never have made it to where we are now without the aid offered. I feel like a loser accepting it, but at least I am working full time. We used the system for what it was meant to be, a step up in life. Now I am finally independant!

I say good on you.
It is good to see a recipient such as yourself use this scheme to get started, and not as a right and means to avoid their responsibilities.
Cheers
Phillip

Yep! Good for you. You used it the way it should be used. You took care of your family, nothing to be ashamed of. I used wic back in Va for less than a year. Didn't like doing it, but I had to take care of my family.

I get the feeling that you are walking 6" taller now DD.

There is no shame in calling on the system to help you out when you need it, and loser is not a word that could be assosiated with yourself in any way shape or form.

Well done Sir. :)

Re: I am finaly independant of the system!

DD I agree with what everyone else has said so far: you must be walking taller and feeling a whole lot better now.

And let's just stop to think for a minute about what actually happened here: like has already been said, you used a system in the way it was designed to be used.

Now correct me if I'm way off here, but isn't it tax dollars that are used for this system? It's YOUR tax dollars! You are entitled to use the system. And best of all you didn't abuse the system: you got the help when you needed it most which is exactly the way the system is supposed to work. Good on you!

I could open up a whole can of worms now by saying that it is crazy that people like yourself (a LEO) who we all depend upon don't get paid enough  but I reckon you already know how glad the majority of us here feel that there are people like yourself who are prepared to do the hard work in keeping our communities that wee bit safer.

Congatulations. Now, welcome to the other side of the system. Now you and your wife will get to work your tails off while a bunch of slugs bleed the system dry  . In my experience, the majority don't use the system as you did, a TEMPORARY bridge in hard times.

Of course your in LE, so I guess you see enough of it already and I'm not telling you anything you don't know. I will say I have tons of respect for those like yourself who use the benefits as a bridge, not a lifestyle. Congrats to Mrs. DD on her degree and new career. :)

Ditto to what everyone else said, DD. Now THAT'S how I want my tax dollars spent! Remember that adversity doesn't create character, it merely exposes it. :) :)

Nothing to be ashamed of DD. I had to do the same thing when my daughter was born. Also the scary part was back then (15 years ago), I was on the police dept. and was only over by about $5-10.00 to qualify for food stamps. Congrats and good luck.

Re: I am finaly independant of the system!

When my first daughter was born we had to go on WIC. Because of health problems my wife couldn't work and I only made $6 an hour as a Jailer. I had the same feelings as you did. I realized later that they were not meant for the bums that I thought they were, but instead for the people like us. When my daughter was about 5 months old I got a small raise and was able to support my family by myself. The powers here tried to keep us on it also. They finally relented and told us to just use whatever we get in the mail as they were basicly already paid for anyhow and the benefits would stop. It took two months for them to stop and yes I used what was left. Glad to hear ya made it work like it was supposed to. Aldens right, now you get to be like the rest of us and watch the REAL loosers suck the system.

Awesome DD!!! You should be proud of your accomplishment.

Amazing how they reacted to you, they're obviously not used to success. Shows how special what you achieved is, and how misused these programs are by others.

Kudos to ya DD for, you and yours, grabbin on tight to the ol boot straps and yankin as hard as you could. It was great to have the safety net, but by your description, you can see how the beauracracy always tries to perpetuate itself.

It's a wonder that there are any exceptions to what is becoming so accepted.

You are made of the 'right' stuff.

DD, you ain't the first and you sure won't be the last to ask for help when you really need it.
Not like some out in the world that won't work at a pie factory and we/you have to pay for them.

If the system was used by people that really needed it, it would be fine, but it is just like all the other programs out there intended for this reason that is abused.

You done good and have nothing to feel bad about.
