I have removed my stator coils from a 1973 Mercury 7.5 hp outboard stator. I ordered new coils and they came with new "clips" that go under the stator preventing them from moving. I can not remember how on earth they go back under the stator coil.

I am asking if anyone has this setup or any motor with stator coils to PLEASE PLEASE take a nice close picture of there stator with the coils installed so I can see how the "black clips" go under the coil on the stator. I thank-you and this forum for all your help in the past and future. I love this forum. It is full of endless knowledge and I always get great help from it.

Do they have to pull the flywheel to get a pic?

That might make all the difference.

Also check mercruiserparts.com for an exploded parts pic.

-W

Like Clams said, go to the site mercruiserparts.com and follow the menus to parts for your model - there's exploded views and you might see what you need to see.

Also, I'm not exactly sure which ingnition system your's has - but I was just looking in the service manuals I have for my 9.8 and they both cover the model year 1973 for the 7.5, and show the various points systems used in that era. One is a Seloc and the other is OEM MErc. Both have pretty complete photos of the points. The Seloc is often available in libraries - and if you want to buy one, it's available in many boat stores. By the way, for what it's worth, in spite of the bad rep. they have, my Seloc has done fine for the carb, lower unit and ignition work I've done on my '74 9.8 ( and like I said, it does cover the '73 7.5).

Re: I am looking for a picture...

I was too eager to buy a manual for my 7.5 Hp outboard Mercury. I ended up purchasing an online seloc manual for my 7.5 Mercury and you know what? No pictures. I can't see anything for this motor. Is there any way you can take a picture of the stator from the book and send it to me, or post it?

I have the Type II Ignition System Thunderbolt - Flywheel Phase Maker (With Points).

Basically, the Type II ignition system consists of a low-speed and high-speed generating coil. The maker contacts and generating coils are phased (rotate together for ignition timing change). This arrangement results in a very efficient ignition power source. The voltage generated by the coils is rectified and used to charge a capacitor. The capacitor is allowed to discharge into the primary of the ignition when the contacts close.

In this system, the current flows to the spark plug and the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder is ignited when the points CLOSE. This fact is in direct contrast to most other systems where the current reaches the spark plug when the points are open.

High resistance at the points is not a factor, since the capacitor voltage (primary) is approximately 1000 volts.

I might be able to do that - however, I don't know how to post photos but could email them to you - if I knew how to email directly.

Re: I am looking for a picture...

Firstly, I want to thank you for your help. I can get a general idea of what to try and do when I install the new ones once again....so thank-you for that.
Secondly, I am very disappointed with Seloc online as they do not have any photos with there manual. I payed the same price as the paper manual and I got nothing as far as pictures.

Patrick Skinnider

Patrick - if you find you need a specific photo in better focus - or at a larger format that you could maybe enlarge better, let me know. I'd still suggest you check in a library. My local library carries Clymer and Seloc manuals for outboards.
