I apologise in advance for what might seem a stupid question...

I have a 3 litre Mercruiser that I want to check the oil level on while on the trailer (in a 2004 Searay bowrider). The manual says "Stop the engine. Allow approximately five minutes for the oil to drain into the pan. The boat must be at rest in the water. Remove the dipstick...."

I have not taken note in the past when the boat is at rest in the water if the engine is level, or tilted slightly forward or back. So my question is, as the boat is on the trailer at the moment if I adjust the jockey wheel so the top of the engine is level will this give a fair reading, or do I need to angle it slightly forward or back to mimic it being in the water?

Cheers, Michael

You know roughly how your boat sets in the water as far as angle just get it close and you will be good.

If you are the obsessive compulsive type put a level on the valve cover.

Ayuh,.... In the water, or on the wagon, the oil level should be Between the high, 'n low marks on the dipstick...

Not above the high mark, 'n not below the low mark...

'n not necessarily At the high mark...
