I cant figure it out!!!

I will start by saying I know nothing about boats, motor, or wiring. A firend of mine is trying to help me get the motor on my patio boat running, but we have no idea what wnet wrong with the wiring. I have an ancient merc 700 that my dad thinks is a mid to late 60's. with a 6 prong plug. My helm controler is a 7 wire Quicksilver, but who knows where it came from. Betwene the helm and motor some one made an adapter but they were smokin' somthing. To say the least I have quite a mess and no idea how to fix it. I am hoping some one can tell me where i can find the corect wiring diagram, or what I need to find it. Anything will help.

I would say the first thing you need is a manual with wiring diagrams for the motor.
Find the serial number on the transom mount and look it up here http://www.eastcoastmarineservice.com/models.html
This will tell you what year you have.
Buy the good manual not the Seloc.
