I cut the connector off of my transducer cable to get the cable from the transducer all the way to the front of the boat. Now, I realize that was a bad idea. Bummer.

I've read quite a bit on how to do this, including searching this site. I'm just looking for input on the most fail-safe way to fix my screw-up.

Lowrance Hook 7

Cable has yellow, blue, orange (bundle 1) and red, black (bundle 2). From what I can tell, each of these bundles has a bare twisted wire also. All of that has shielded foil wrap. I haven't yet carefully peeled more back to get a better look.

I've seen people who carefully peel back the foil wrap, solder, foil wrap, shrink wrap each bundle and then shrink wrap both bundles together. But, there are also people who have said soldering this type of connection is a bad idea (I don't remember the reason...just lots of talk about how one should only solder circuit boards). I'm not going to claim I know how to solder, although I think I have a cheap soldering iron somewhere.

I've also seen mention of an Airmar connector box. Basically, it just has screw terminals inside a box. I'm assuming it's fully shielded. I plan to call them tomorrow. If its the $35 I've read about that may be the way to go.

Just looking for a solution that has the best chance of working considering my lack of soldering skills. I was so excited yesterday to get other wires rerouted, debugged and found access to a failing gas tank sending unit (new one ordered) and got this cable wired to the front...only to find out today I should have never made this cut. Now I'm really bummed out.

Two ways to solve the problem...just solder the wires back together and heat shrink or buy an Airmar in-line splice kit if your not comfortable soldering.

FWIW: don’t worry much about the shields. You could cut the shielding completely off the cable with no affect on performance. The individual shields are the result of using an off the self cable.

The braided drain wire gets connected to earth ground...pretty uncommon on recreational boats. If connected at all, it’s connected to battery ground defeating the it’s purpose
