I always used to go with the $9.99 Timex but they don't seem to make those anymore. So, now it's the $20-30 Timex. At least those are battery powered so I don't have to wind them. Usually get 5 or 6 years out of them unless I lose or crunch them. I really never could understand expensive watches. Kind of like buying a Ferrari to pull a boat.

I don't own a watch due to the fact can't wear at work, won't wear fishing (because fish don't know the time), have a clock in each vehcle, cell has a clock. Don't see the need. When I was younger had a timex took a bad spill on a bicycle ground a hole through cristal kept on ticking. Guess if I had the money for a Rolex, or other high end watch I'd buy a new boat.

Fish may not know the time, but the wife certainly does. "Honey, I'll be home by noon", I'd better wear a watch!

By the way, the reason you wear an expensive watch (as it was explained to me by a sales guy at a company I use to work for) is that it shows that you put a lot of value in your time. Sounds like a hearty load of male bovine digestive byproduct to me, but whatever...

I like to find watches that make a statement, and don't look like boring old timepieces. I will never own a roly... they are just way to boring. Good resale I guess though.

Had my Citizen Eco-Drive for about 8 years. Been through everything. I only take it off to sleep and shower. Not bad for $300.

Same here, mine is eleven years old.

Only problem with a Rolex is you have to have them serviced every 5 years becuase the lubricant dries up. $400 to have it cleaned out. Because the lubricant dried up on mine I stripped a gear so an added expense.

I have a Rolex and an Omega and I haven?t worn either one of them in many years. The Rolex was a gift from an ex-girlfriend and I inherited the Omega from my uncle. The Rolex stopped working (although it lasted longer than she did) and when I told the jeweler that it seemed hard to set before it stopped he gave me the big bucks story about needing cleaned. They want 300 bucks just to replace the battery in the Omega. They both sit stowed away in my sock drawer and my everyday and go to church and funeral watch is a Walmart twenty dollar Timex I have had since 1988. Just take my knife and flip off the cover and replace the battery every five or ten years.

It is not that I am cheap but I do reuse zip lock bags and still crush and take my aluminum cans to the scrap dealer for the few bucks I get.

The original post explained that the retailer talked with the maker of the watch, which I would not have done. I would have dealt with them directly and schmoozed them into sending me a new one. For that kind of coin I expect perfect, and anything less is unacceptable. Dealing with a retailer is just adding a layer of insulation from the solution. I'd go back and try this to insure I received value for my coin. Maybe give it a shot, you have nothing to lose.
And my Kenneth Cole is running well going on 7 years, it was a gift, and I suspect it was a cheaper one.

The reason the rep asked the question about the shower, is that the steam can get into water-resistant watches, and even water-proof watches if the case has ever been open (battery change, etc.). Makes me wonder if the store that sold it to you had to replace the battery before it was sold. As for the second hand, that's a quality issue that the manufacturer (you would think) would repair/replace under warranty.

I NEVER take off my watch. And I do mean NEVER. I'm currently in my 4th year with my Movado, and have had no issues. Had to have a link added (funny how age makes your watchband shrink), and took it to a fancy watch repair place to have that done ($20). If (when) I need the battery replaced, I'll go there again, not just any jeweler who says they can do it.

Watch before the Movado was an ESQ (owned by Movado), and before that was a Skagen. I'd recommend any of the three for accuracy and durabilty.

If you're not in love with that old Rolex you might consider selling it!...there's a strong market for used Rolex's...probably worth $1000 or more!, depending on SS or Gold, model, etc.!...

Just for laughs and giggles a friend of mine gave me a fake rolex yachtmaster that he bought while in Mexico in 1999........I have worn it almost every day for 12 years and it keeps perfect time!

I've always strived to keep my watches and clocks with the correct time. I have a radio that receives the time tone from Boulder Colorado, plus an MFJ atomic clock on my desk. I notice that the time on any GPS/Cell phone device I have is 13 seconds ahead of the Atomic clock tone. Can anybody explain why?
