To all the newer boaters (like me),

Last weekend I went to the National Capitol Boat Show and ended up talking to some of the USCG guys at their booth. They were really stressing how important it is to take a boating safety class - which I'm sure most, if not all people here will agree with.

They had some papers about where to go for local classes but also directed me to www.boatus.org where I can take the same class online and also print my certificate after I pass.

I didn't think a class would really apply to me because I've got a small boat (12 footer) and can't do a lot of the things with it that the big boats can. But, being an internet junkie, I went to check it out just for fun anyways and learned that the class did apply to me and I'm glad I took it.

The online class is free and really was interesting. It didn't take long and I did learn a few things. So, if you haven't got certified, do yourself and your fellow boaters a favor and check it out.

Happy boating!

Well…congratulations, Jsfinn! It was definitely time well spent.

What did you learn that you knew absolutely nothing about before the class?

Re: I got certified for General Boating Safety

Thanks 18rabbit,

Mostly about using your horn to overtake a slower boat. It's not so much that I'd be overtaking anybody on my boat (heck, I don't even have a horn), but when other people pass me, I'll know what's going on.

There were sections about using your lights at night - again, that doesn't apply to me becuse my boat doens't have lights (don't need 'em - boat is too small so they arn't required, and I won't be going out at night anyways), but someday I'll need to know that stuff.

It's good stuff. My dad is talking about getting a boat when he retires in a year or two (He really liked the big Glastron 30something footers)and that's when this stuff will really come in handy.

I did the same thing. I learned a great deal about rules of the road type situations. Very handy online.

Re: I got certified for General Boating Safety

I have a friend that is taking the long USPS class now. She will not go unless I commute with her…so I sit there and keep my mouth shut. She was not excited about the class at first but all that changed at the 3rd week. Now she won’t stop talking about it. :) For her everything is new. I actually learned something too…about storing a compass on its side.

The guest speaker last week (on the topic of safety equipment) is involved with the Power Squadron, the USCG program, a bunch of vessel safety and inspection programs, very active locally in safety issues…proceeded to pull a 25mm flare gun out, immediate putting her finger on the trigger, and waving it around the room pointing it at just about everyone. My heart started pound hard enough to scoot me around in my chair. After talking about flares for a few minutes, waving the flare gun around the whole time, she cracked the breech and a live shell popped out onto the floor!!! She didn’t even know it was loaded!!! The whole time she had one finger on the trigger and her thumb on the hammer.

I guess it isn’t so much what you know, but how you use your knowledge. But maybe I’m just a little overly sensitive. I used to teach firearms safety.

Re: I got certified for General Boating Safety

My husband, myself and daughter all signed up with a local college about 10 years ago and took the USCG Power Squadron Boating and Safety Course. It was only one semester. At first I thought this is way more information then we need especially regarding navigation and sailing. However, once we started traveling the IC waterway and ship channels it was exactly what we needed to know.

The information we learned has made us really cautious and courteous boaters. Its also made us realize that anyone that has a boat should be required to take a general boat safety course.
