It does suck. Once I get big nut off, will there be enough play so I can get the back rectifier bolts out or will I still need a flywheel puller ? What is that nut size? I know its bigger than 1 1/4"

Will I still need a puller to move flywheel enough to get rectifier off ?

Probably. You can rent or buy one from your local auto parts store.

I'd think a fair time to do the job would be a couple of hours say $200 by a reputable repairer. Got to be worth considering.

The alternative to do it properly means...
A genuine OMC manual for your motor.
A flywheel puller.
A flywheel strap.
A torque wrench.
Any other tools that you don't already have.
The required sealant.
The time to read the book and gain enough knowledge to complete the job.

I'm not trying to talk you out of doing it just warning you there are some traps along the way.

How do you know your rectifier is bad?

RECTIFIER - New tach stopped working, new Walmart battery went bad in 3 months of just running motor once in a while in driveway. You got another way to test ? I have multi tester and home made DVA which I'm not sure how to interpret. Also wouldn't mind testing STATOR.

I have OMC manual.

I have Harbor Freight electric impact wrench.

Will buy 1 5/16" socket (12 points).

Will try to come up with strap. Some kind of piston stop should work too what I read.

Will loaner tool auto parts store for puller.

Not sure what adhesive you're talking about but got the gasket sealer.

This motor is definitely the school of hard knocks but hopefully I'm learning some things.

I had to remove the stator on mine too, just another 4 bolts. I used a flywheel wrech. I had one for the racecar, to turn flywheel on the motor to put in converter bolts, worked good, but a piston stop should work too.

A strap is a crappy holder for a 90 HP motor. Get a flywheel holder/turner (Ebay for < $20). Like this:Flywheel holder 140.jpg

Rectifier & stator testing are fully covered in the Electrical System described in your manual, it would be silly for me to retype what's in there but if you have any specific questions about the tests only too happy to help.

Although it's not in the book you could do a basic voltage test on the battery at rest & running but you will need to run it for a while if the battery is down on charge.

Start with a fully charged Battery.
Check the battery voltage at rest & record the reading.
Start the motor & check the battery voltage, let it run for 15 Minutes while recording the reading and it should eventually get 1 or 2 Volts above the at rest reading.

The numbers are a bit rubbery because they will vary due to the charge in the battery & the size of the battery.

Not to sound like a smart *** but I have an '86 90 and changing out the rectifier is as simple as loosening the two bolts & disconnecting three leads. One red, two yellow. No need to remove the flywheel. Rectifier is located just ahead of the wire rail on the stb side of the motor.

Fair question but I think you'll find you have the 6A stator with no Tilt & Trim and no voltage regulator.

So what do I use that DVA I made and don't know how to use for again ???

I've never needed to use one but as I understand it they are used to measure the peak voltage between the charge coil and the power pack.

It has nothing to do with the stator producing power to charge the battery, that is produced by the stator windings.

There are no specs in the oem manual for checking out the charging system with a DVA. All you use is an ohmmeter mainly to check the stator. If that checks okay you normally have a bad rectifier or regulator/rectifier.
