I bought a 22 foot sailboat from 1980. Supposedly its a texas mariner, but I don't know if that's true. I have 2000 for a new motor. What do you recommend? I recently bought a Honda, but it seems that no one sells honda parts unless its a specialty honda dealer. I don't know much about motors, so I need to know which brands are the best and most reliable, and which are easiest to repair. Also, which can I find parts for easiest. I think im looking for a longshaft 9.9 or lower, with remote control abilities, but I can't find prices on the dealer websites. Can someone please point me in a right direction? Thanks a lot.

Best - Bryan

I'm a weekend mechanic myself. However, in all my 30 years of boating I have yet to bring any motor in for servicing or parts. You should be able to run for upteen years before anything should go wrong on a new motor.

Other than changing the oil, filter, and the spark plugs yearly(which anybody can do) and maybe a belt once in a blue moon . Does it really matter if you have to go to a Honda dealer for this?

Honda has a terrific reputation for being smooth, reliable, quiet, and fuel efficient. I would just enjoy the one you have.

No matter what brand of engine you wind up with, you will have to go to that brand of dealer to get parts. Since no brand of outboard allows remote models to be shipped directly to a consumer, most dealers have dropped remote engine prices from their websites. Any brand of engine you purchase today is going to be equal to any other brand in terms of quality.

Find out what dealer youre going to use in your boating area and buy what he services and stocks parts for.

find a dealership you like. sounds like you really dont know what you need as far as technical and mounting specs. find a dealer that will measure your bracket to water line depth and can try to figgure the bracket to water line at heel over and can prop the engine to the hull. most little motors come with a prop. seldom is it the correct prop. especially with a displacement hull.
so you need to find a dealer that is knowledgeable with pusher motors on blowboats and treat them well.
just a quick note
if a tech comes to your hull to do some measuring chat nice and tip well. most of us techs help those that help us :) :)
if ya treat the tech like a second class servant thats about what service ya get.
most all the modern motors are ok. some perform specific functions better than others.

Contact Porta-bote.com. I just had a very
good experience purchasing a Tohatsu 9.8
4-stroke. It was ordered, shipped and
delivered in less than a week. No shipping,
no sales tax, no dealer mark-up. I fully agree with Cobra 3.0 about not needing to ever have an outboard serviced by a dealer. Most dealers won't waste their time on the little ones anyway. I also converted from 2-stroke to 4-stroke and I'm convinced 2-stroke is on the way out.
