Re: I have a dream...

Wouldn't it be nice if that dream finally became reality. After 40 years you would think that we as a nation would have grown beyond these petty prejudices. I believe, and this is just my opinion, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Either race is guilty. Anytime one of the "screaming black "leaders"" (my term for Al Sharpton, & Louis faracan(sp?)) they set race relations back 5 years. Same goes for any white leader that promotes one race over another because of past injustices. (All that breeds is hatred against the special privilege and the group it is suppose to be helping)

I'm sorry I probably sent this into a direction you did not want it to go. I was pushed over the edge by what the local NAACP chapter said. Some schools have in their policy that if a snow day occurs they make up the day the next available holiday. So some schools in Jersey are open which sent the NAACP into a frenzy. I would think they would be more interested in getting the best education for their students then giving the kids a day off for which a majority (IMHO) could care less as to the why. The Ironic thing is that the kiddies had off MLK's actual B-day.

  Sorry Mellowyellow this has had me riled up all day.

Focusing on him for a minute, did you realize he was only 28 when he made that speech? Amazing. If you ever get a chance read the speech along with his letters from the Birmingham jail.

I don't think that the people that are carrying his message, in his name today, have the same motivations that he did in a temultious time in our history.

I agree with what the man had to say. Yes, he did make a difference. There are people, namely Abraham Lincoln, who did just as much if not more to advance civil rights. Abe Lincoln gave his life, and the lives of hundreds of thousands of americans to stand for his principle. He doesn't have a national holiday for his birthday anymore

I am not a racist by any stretch of the imagination, but I think the whole MLK day thing was just a way for politicians to reach out to get the minority vote.

Racism is a two way street.

But for some reason it seems to be O.K. for one race and not the other.

I honor the man. He had great ideas and applied them fairly. I don't think that todays hate mongers agree with his vision. Something ironic here in Texas. It is a "working" holiday for state employees which means we have to go in a do what needs to be done then we jet. Today was not only MLK Jr. day, its also Confedarate Heros Day, and the state honors both of them by listing them as official holidays.

great man, way ahead of his times. a forward thinker that truly made a difference. no doubt in my mind he deserves a holiday.

as for abe lincoln, i don't think there is a comparision. i may be way off, but i'm pretty sure lincoln freed the slaves for political and national motives, not because he believed blacks and whites were equal.

Yes indeed, Dr. Kings Dream is True and Just...

However, judging the man by some unfortunate immoral decisions with reguards to his infidelity, it directly effects the content of his character.... Upon closer examination, I find him to be at least somewhat hypocritical to the very words he so vigorously preached... Sorry.. I feel he's definately not worthy of a national holiday... :(

Why do our Heroes always seem to let us down?... :(

Ok, let me have it!

it's not about the man per-say.. it's what the man visoned, achived, an accomplished, an the 'persived' image.. an how his peers reacted an responded..

if judged for a hero's personal private trates an behavior.. then not even JESUS would get the nod..

Re: I have a dream...

The man preached peace with a wink and a nod! Ironic how much violence followed a man that talked of peace. I always thought that the "I had a dream" speach ( which was partially stolen from another speach by the way) was himself with another woman in bed. To put him in the same sentence as Lincoln is ludicrist. More likely to put him in the same sentence as Hanoi Jane. Crabby... father knows best

while men may come and go, ideals live on.
as witnessed by his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.
surely you don't believe "colored's" should sit
in the back of the bus still? (rosa parks)
preach non-violence? sorry, we only respect strength.
guess we showed him and bobby too in those years...

Re: I have a dream...

I have a dream also :) ...that people honor his dream...stop inciting hate, division with reverse discrimination, and repatriation and special rights or priviges. :(

BTW, it was conservatives that passed the civil rights act of 1964'. Algores father was one of the democratic senators that voted against it.
