I have a question, maybe a dumb one but here goes. If I had twin motors on my boat, for simplicity sake I say twin 100hp. I know the combined horse power is 200 but is that the same as a single 200hp motor. I know the idea behind twin motors is redundancy and not so much power.

A 100 Merc weighs 350#. A 200 weighs 400#. You have a starting battery for each at about another 50# extra on the twin. You have the drag and maintenance of 2 engines.

You also have 2 props in the water for better acceleration and towing ability. Top speed is usually one or two mph of each other, the single engine being a bit faster due to lower drag

You also have increased maneuverability with two props, and a backup engine in case one fails. It's not likely both would develop an issue at the same time, unless they're both fed from the same fuel tank and there's a fuel issue.
