just saw another nineteen at my local watering hole for the first time since i've owned a nineteen this last weekend. a red one... was cool to see someone else with a nineteen. there pretty few and far in between...

your question regaurding the shaft seals may be more appropreitly posted in the main eng. fourm.... http://forums.iboats.com/forumdisplay.php?f=21

also, which shaft seals?

don't know if ya got a service manual. but it will let ya in on all the facts regaurding your engine and drive... get it here... ya need #1, a very large file, over 1 gb. but well worth the download wait....http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=251571

Re: I have water in my out drive????

i've no experience replacing those seals. but i do know your gonna need a least 1 specialty tool to remove the nut to go after the seals. a bearing carrier retainer wrench... http://www.iboats.com/Bearing_Carri...0925027--**********.762022148--view_id.271217
by looking at the service manual ya need a puller to remove the carrier too. i believe this is where the seals are, in the bearing carrier..... go get yer service manual. it explains exactly what ya need to be doing for replaceing the seals. and there may be more to it than that as there's other inspections that are done after the carrier is removed...

here's another place ya can get some ideas and some tools to do the deed... http://www.mercstuff.com/bearingcarrierremoval.htm

the oem service manual has the exact method of servicing. so i'd take anything else with a grain of salt.... imho.....

i ain't the guy to answer yer question man. maybe the mods will move this over to the eng. forum for you. you'd have many more gurus reading this thread there. i'm just a end user like you... but my initial guess would be that water don't lub gears. and gears like lub. + water causes metal to rust. rust and gears in mesh and brgs. don't like rust. + i'd think the rust would cause the seals to go out as the metal surface would no longer be smooth, but rusty and rough. rough metal and seals i don't think go together.... you can test your drive for it being sealed too. a drive pressure test. ya empty the lub and then give it about 15psi of pressure and see if the air leaks out. it should hold this pressure forever......
