I just got back from the Boston boat show, and could not believe my eyes….I would say that 98% of all boats with outboards had Yamaha 4-stroke. The only mercs I saw were on a very few low cost boats (classic series mercs). And I think I saw two…yes two boats with johnsons, and this is a very big show!!!! What happened to all the competition?

The manufacturers and dealers (both boat and motor) are responding to market conditions, on both the demand and supply side. There are local/regional favorites, pricing issues, real and perceived quality issues, manufacturer/dealer squabbles, generational attitude differences, etc.

I went to the Spokane, WA boat show a few weeks ago, the dominating motor there was the Honda 4 stroke, and all flavors of Merc, so I would definatly say its a regional thing. My local shops sell mainly Honda, but you can get all the others as well. Me, I'm a Merc man....

Brunswick owns a lot of boat lines and has started requiring them to be rigged only for Mercs.
