I just wanted to show off a little bit.
This is for my 16' Luger leeward. I used spar varnish on the tiller and poly on the plywood parts.
Three grades of steelwool on the brass and then hit it with some butchers wax. Thought the was might keep it shiny a bit longer. photo230231.JPG photo230230.JPG photo230229.JPG photo230231.JPG photo230229.JPG photo230230.JPG

Being an avid woodworker, I can appreciate the time and effort it took to get those results!!!

You certainly have a reason to be proud. Very nice work and equally nice finish. I also am a woodworker and know the effort involved... :first: :thumb:

Most glorious! Makes me shudder to think of the condition of the tiller, centreboard box cover and transom insert on my poor old Petrel sailing dinghy. But inspires me as well. Another month and it will be winter project time up here. Hmmmmmm.

Wow! Thanks for the support.
I used an orbital palm sander with 100 grit, then 150 grit.
Wiped it down with naptha and then applied spar varnish with a brush. sanding with medium steel wool between coats and wiping naptha then a tack cloth.
Final coat was a rattle can of gloss spar varnish.
This inspires me to do the same on the teak around the centerboard which also has a strips of brass.
This I only gave a good scuffing and two coats of satin spar varnish.
Maybe next year.

Very nice.
....may I suggest that you really don't want to use steel wool anywhere on a boat. It is amazing how tiny unseen pieces of the steel wool will haunt you with rust spots and streaks as time goes on.

The haunting has already begun!!
Lots of little rust streaks. A little CLR will take care of that.

I will go for scotch pads in the future.

I need to put a coat of wax on the upper deck asap. I was just gonna get some cheap auto spray wax for the time being just to seal out the leaf stains.

I'll take some shots when its all together and in the water this weekend. Over all its a damn pretty boat, and it looks like this was a kit boat that came in a crate.
Everything is well made with solid brass mostly teak.
But I wont get any thumbs up for my homemade kicker mount.
Pressure treated pine. Not so hot.
I figure once I get a working prototype I will find someone with teak slabs and just recreate it with the pine as a template.
If that's too much of a pain I will go for something else.
