I have a 1989 sea ray with a MerCruiser 4.3 it will idle around just fine and low speed down the river, but when I go to accelerate after a few seconds the ignition fuse blows. And then the boat turns over for a second and then keeps blowing fuses now the trim does not work any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is this a new to you boat, or have you had it a while?
Have you done anything to it recently?

There should be three wires on the alternator, one is the main feed and two smaller ones. Remove the two smaller wires off the ALT and also the wires on the + side of the coil. Turn the key ON and if it didn't blow the fuse, start reconnecting the wires until it does.

Hi ALLDODGE. What exactly does that process check for and accomplish? I have a 2005 bayliner 175 with a mercruiser 3.0 in it and am having a very similar issue, so I am on here reading threads to find help too.

Thanks.

Disconnecting the alternator wires removes it from the ignition feed. If the ALT is shorted it can blow the 20 amp ignition fuse. You disconnect the purple and Red/purple wires to remove it from the circuits. If it doesn't blow the fuse and you can start and run the motor then you know its the ALT
