Maybe she's related to Compo (Last of the summer wine) :)

I've had ferrets, and I don't blame the University at all. They smell (even though they are de-scented) and they can never be 100% litterbox trained. And since her pet isn't a service animal, she needs to get a teddy bear instead.

It amazes me that people don't understand that if everybody gets accomodated for their little corner of insanity that there will be no corners left?

Reminds me of the lady who sued to have her picture on her drivers license covered in a veil. Where's the ACLU when you need them?

What part of that is it that you find funny, KIZ?

I wonder what her Doctor says about the therapeutic effects of the critter.

Come on JB. She needs to find a college dorm that allows pets. You CANNOT accomodate everyone, everywhere. It IS funny that there are people (aparently you too  ) that think this type of accomodation can be made all of the time. What if I was comforted by an Elephant for my affliction? Silly, OK a horse? Silly, OK a then a small pony? Why are my needs less important than hers? Because my confort comes from something larger? The concept is, in fact, funny. Not her particular, and possibly tragic, affliction.

Jb, It is not so much funny, but strange... But I do understand about the problem... Animals have a strong sence to know if there is a problem with a person whom they are close too.. They react in a nurturing way to help.. Now as for the problem with the ferrit.. All they would have to do is train the animal to retrieve the medicine needed before the she has her panic attacks.. This is how they would be able to call the ferrit a service animal.. I have to agree they are a little sticky, but if she doesn't have to share a room and the animal is cleaned and properly maintained in a good living enviroment, the board should let her have it.. A ferrit can be trained in less than aweek to retrieve. I trained my pet rat to retreive my 80lb dog.. It works, don't really know how I did it, but it just happened one day as a joke.. Go get Dobbie and I would walk down the hall and the rat would follow me.. I would let the dog in and the 2 of them would play. Then one day I was just laying in my room sick and I told the rat.. Go get Dobbie and the rat took off and came back with my dog.. Now I was in high school, when I trained my critters, also had a King White pigeon too. If you don't believe me I have pictures..

You read a lot more into my question than was there, QC.

It had nothing to do with the University policy or the girl's suit.

Many pets are known to show calming, soothing compassion to their human companions. I wonder what the girl's Doctor says about the ferret as therapy, that is all.

JB,

Me too. Yes, I did read more into it. Sorry. I think one of the major problems in this country is some belief that everything is fair. My mom taught me when I was very little that "life's not fair". She's right . . .

KIZ,

I missed that part, Now that there IS funny. :D

A "ferret" to calm panic attacks?

Every ferret I've ever seen was in a constant state of panic.

Re: I know this is mean, but I find this funny.

When I was a kid, one of my paper-route customers had a ferret. Freddie went through all the phases of a puppy. If I was late delivering the paper, Freddie was upset. He would run to meet me when I came around. If I stopped by when I was outside playing, he was very excited. So these animals do have compassion and emotion.

Also when I was kid, my mother had a cat who hated me. However, when I was sick, Suki was always at my side in bed (I said when I was SICK!). So animals can sense when you are not well or are stressed. And they do try to soothe their human companions.

I do find her career choice ironic however. And she has the power to find housing that would allow her ferret. If she can't go a few hours in classes without her ferret/distraction, then maybe she should seek online classes.

Sometimes you must accept that life is not fair. Sometimes you must accept that you can't have everything your way. It's time for her to grow up a little and learn to accommodate herself. Not expect everyone else to accommodate her. Sometimes you must accept responsibility for yourself.
